Glorious Getaway: St. Regis Princeville

Whenever we’re asked to name the favorite places we’ve traveled to, Kauai inevitably makes its way to the top of the list as does the St. Regis Princeville, our favorite place we’ve stayed on the island. Nestled right on Hanalei Bay on Kauai’s North Shore, one of the best things about this property is the incredible view, which visitors have near-constant access to (even in the shower! Check out the photo below). It’s a great choice for people who like an active vacation—guests have access to two dive spots right off the resort’s beach and can also play a round at Princeville’s renowned Makai Golf Club. One local activity that’s a must-try: stand up paddling. Rent your board from the folks at Hawaiian Surfing Adventures, whose instructors also offer surfing lessons in the bay. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s worth splurging on the tasting menu at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Kauai Grill, featuring local fare like Bigeye tuna and soy-glazed short ribs. When you’re ready for some downtime hit the pool where you can wave down waiters carrying chilled pineapple skewers, or visit the poolside spa featuring treatments with local elements like lemongrass and palm oil.

Hotel of the Week: Grand Hyatt Kauai

Friends with children often ask us for kid-friendly vacation ideas, and the Hawaiian island of Kauai is always at the top of our recommendation list. Whether it’s hiking Waimea Canyon or sailing along the Na Pali Coastspotting a humpback whale breaching offshore or taking a surf lesson in Hanalei Bay, Kauai is filled with incredible experiences you’re bound to bond over.

One of our favorite, family-friendly hotels on the island is the Grand Hyatt in Poipu. It’s a big property (602 rooms) but, spread across 50 acres, it rarely feels crowded. This hotel is a particularly great pick if your kids love to swim—between two outdoor pools (one is adults only), a 1.5 acre saltwater swimming lagoon, and the beach, there’s plenty of waterside real estate to relax by. The hotel also offers a day camp for kids, where activities like hula and ukulele lessons keep them happily entertained should parents want time to play a game of tennis or a round of golf overlooking the Pacific at Poipu Bay Golf Course. One must-do while you’re here: a massage at Anara Spa, the largest on the island, where guests wind their way through quiet paths lined with hibiscus and bougainvillea to thatched-roof treatment rooms that include private, outdoor lava rock showers. We’d spring for the p0haku treatment, an 80-minute massage with hot stones and warm Hawaiian oils.

The Glorious Bucket List: Na Pali Coast

Where: The northwest coast of the Hawaiian island of Kauai

Why: The sheer size of this 16-mile-stretch of volcanic cliffs is breathtaking to behold. There’s an almost supernatural quality to the bare, rugged landscape—one of the reasons it’s served as a backdrop for films like Jurassic Park and King Kong.

How: Inaccessible by car, the easiest way to take in the Na Pali Coast is by boat. We like Captain Andy’s for sailing trips that range in length and include extras like snorkeling stops, dinner, and drinks. And, if you’re visiting during the December to April whale season, you’re also likely to experience the incredible sight of humpbacks breaching out of the water. Another way to see the coast is from the air with any of the region’s helicopter tour operators. Outdoorsy-types with the right permits and know-how can also opt to experience the coast on foot with a hike along the 22-mile Kalalau Trail.
