Glorious Tunes: Other Lives

We’re loving the modern folk sound of Oklahoma band Other Lives. Comprised of Jesse Tabish (vocals, piano, guitar and percussion), Jenny Hsu (cello and backing vocals), Jon Mooney (violin, horns, piano and percussion), Colby Owens (clarinet and percussion) and Josh Onstott (bass and percussion), the group’s songs have a dreamy, dramatic quality that reminds us of Fleet Foxes or Radiohead—in fact, Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace project released a remix of the title track of their second album, Tamer Animals. You can check out the video for the song above and, if you want to catch them live, the band will be touring the U.S. this fall, with their first gig set for September 29 in Tulsa, OK. Go here to see the complete list of cities and dates.

Glorious Tunes: Trampled by Turtles

Is there anything more Glorious than a fantastic song? One that makes you smile or dance—a melody that takes you back to a wonderful memory or reminds you of a favorite person or place? We’ve been meaning to incorporate more music onto the site for a while, and so we’ve created a new category called Glorious Tunes, which will feature songs from modern American bands we love. This week it’s Trampled by Turtles, a soulful bluegrass group out of Deluth, Minnesota who recently released their sixth album, Stars and Satellites. Check out their outstanding cover of Arcade Fire’s “Rebellion (Lies)”, one of the performances from the AV Club’s musical web series Undercover. If you like what you hear, take a look at their upcoming tour dates—this summer they’ll be playing cities across the U.S. including Newport, San Francisco, Omaha, and Chicago.

Glorious Movement: Running Prospect Park

We all have rituals, little things we do to make every day a little richer, a little more Glorious. I adore living in New York City, but growing up surrounded by nature as I did, it’s important for me to spend time outdoors on a regular basis, and one of my favorite spots to go is Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The mornings here are shady and cool, the roads still empty of heavy traffic, and it’s my favorite time of day to run the loop of the park’s main road. It’s a little over three miles, and when I factor in the distance from my apartment to the southern-most access point, it takes around 50-minutes to complete. Adding to the fun of running is the chance to listen to some awesome music for one lovely, uninterrupted hour. I’ve been all about this new playlist I created, particularly the first song “Sweet Disposition” by The Temper Trap—the melody is totally uplifting and kicks off every run on the right note. Here are some shots from around the park. What are your favorite spots to exercise, and what workout tunes are you loving right now?

While I didn’t make it to Coachella this year, I still had a blast reading all about the fabulous  music, parties, and, most especially, fashion that came out of the last two weekends in the desert. In case you missed it, here are some of my favorite stories from the festival:

• Street style highlights from the Telegraph, Elle.com, and Harper’s Bazaar

Billboard ranks the 10 best performances of both weekends

• Ruby Aldridge on performing and on her favorite summer playlist at Vogue.com

• Instagram photo essay of the festival via Guest of a Guest

• Band interviews and festival coverage from Rolling Stone

• What celebrities wore at this year’s festival from In Style

• Florence Welch of Florence + The Machines breaks down her festival style on Vogue.com

• A collection of images from the L.A. Times coverage of the festival
