If Robinson Crusoe had had fancier digs (and was somehow marooned in wine country) I think they might have looked something like the guest lodges at Calistoga Ranch. Nestled in a private canyon in Upper Napa Valley, the 48-rooms at this resort blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings with expansive cedar decks, polished wood details, and floor-to-ceiling windows. My favorite amenity: outdoor rain showers like the one below.

Guests here may never want to leave their rustic-chic accommodations, but those who do will discover a wide range of activities. At the ranch, you can spend a day by the pool, take a yoga class, go for a hike, or hit the spa for a charmingly region-specific treatment like the “Cabernet Classic”—a red wine body scrub followed by a grapeseed oil massage and wine bath. There’s wine tasting, of course, as well as wine-blending classes and demos by members of the Culinary Institute of America on property. Or, head out and spend the day tasting around the area’s more than 300 wineries.

End the day with cocktails at sunset, followed by organic farm-to-table fare at the ranch’s super romantic restaurant The Lakehouse, set among the trees on the shore of Lake Lommel.
